Other Issues in Media and Society

Having gone through all the blogs and reading as much as possible,i must admit am quite intrigued by different interesting and engaging topics every blogger choose.its said we learn something new everyday and have definitely learnt a lot than what i thought i knew or totally did not!.all the topics were talking about challenges society faces when imposed with media!(usually negative for a given number of reasons)not only that but some bloggers went out of their way to give  media some credit for its positive impact to society which are among my best five…or more…topics..it wasn’t easy deciding on which given all the interesting topics.anyway here are some that will help with better understanding of this issues.hope you enjoy them too!.

1.shopaholism the new modern disease

its becoming hard everyday  or people to have more reason to save money than spend it.everyone blames it on the need to use money  growing hence they cant save enough.students are not able to pay their higher education loans when they are done with college and working.the invention of online shopping is one of factors to blame for this especially for females and recently male.the products are colorful and outrageously discounted which one cant avoid until its late yet its one of the under addressed issue when financial experts talk about financial constrain and causes.the blogger highlighted how this works in both ways.

2.media censorship by government

despite being on 21 century with different countries trying to change regimes from authoritarian governments  media still suffers lot of censorship from ruling government in their countries.this blogs gives insight on how that is with an example of Kazakhstan. we always blame the media for all the bad but never stop to think why they might do something. it is mostly because of a powerful figure behind the scene or institution. For every action there is always a reason that may or may not be controlled.most media house owners or social site developers indirectly choose what to be aired, media framing and which news item or any other news category as impact.its not always up to the anchor, journalist or even the editor in some cases.

3.social media fighting criminality and beyond

Positive change of wave is the right words to use for this blog topic.the blogger Alima highlighted how social media also is advantageous and important to the society especially in policing communities show casing its benefit with different evidence of stories.

4.Media and women

Being a feminist and fighting for women’s rights to equality in today’s society this topic is quite close to my heart.it talks bout women misrepresentation and inequality especially in sports today. The image of women in sports is far from pleasing but improving. There are still some major issues with the global image of women in the media. Which usually i viewed as being less dominate comparing to males that are still the dominate genre in the sports media.even sports women are seen more in a physical sexual way than what their career is. Anya highlights this with current stories on sports women figures.

5.Children and advertising

it might seem that the there are more than one topics related in this blogs but you will be surprised how different ideologies are presented by each which mat or may not relate but mostly open up your mind to more information and education.though krystynah blog talks about influence of media to children,i like that she influences her discussion on younger children who are always the great buyers of commercial processed and junk food the children from age 2 and teens.i like how she uses examples of establishment commercial to prove her point how addictions is literally forced on children by food commercial and toys!

……If it were up to me i would right down all i learnt from all the blogs but my tired twitching fingers wont allow me to type more.anyway enjoy!

My View

This theme is important because we are living in social media stream. Internet users spend time on social networks in every one out of five.in America alone each person spends about 8 hours a day on social media network either contacting friends or family leaving in different region or country.

We are exposed to a lot of ads in a day, play games to avoid boredom, there is no enough guarantee, exposure to crimes and mistreatment like bullying that leads to comes depression. With this fast evolution, it becomes impossible for parents, teachers, caretakers and physicians to control what children are consume from media.

With new apps invented every day and photography made better, children are able to download apps, register even when forbidden to underage then post videos, images and messages to each other which is already on cloud and can’t be recovered if a teen is being threatened or bullied.

media as some aspects that are both positive and negative, for one, many social media do not have restrictions on creativity therefore teenagers abuse this. Also,it supports informal use of other related work, general understanding and respect of other people freedom and alternative way of socializing creating an antisocial teen who can communicate face to face. (&CHRISTINE, 2012)

It can also affect child’s mental health. Research shows that the more the teenager use social media the more it goes up with likelihood of being depressed, getting in trouble, become narcissistic, aggressive and antisocial especially Facebook  users. (ROSEN, 2011)

It is bad enough that adolescents are cyber bullying by friends but many also fall victims of online sexual predators who are often strangers. They tend to be victims because most teenagers do not know about internet safety and privacy policy.

Children who grow up watching movies, violent movies and animation which are supposed to be harmless tend to be violent when playing with other kids portraying what they do because the message sent to them is that it’s okay to be violent.

CARTOON VIOLENCE SINCE 1914

Exposure to media is a part of modern life, but you can help your child identify what is worth spending time and what isn’t.

Check out the music, movies, TV shows, games and celebrities your child likes. Then know what is interesting to him, spot the pictures and messages that are influencing him.
Try monitoring your child on what he is watching on TV or the internet and try to negotiate some limits and rules. Talk about messages.
Monitoring your teen’s choices is just making him aware of the negative influences. It is a good idea to limit on how much your teen plays video games or watches TV.
You should also choose to ban some apps, shows and games. Explain why you are doing so.
You can also encourage your teen to interpret what they see. Pick out a TV ad or a magazine and ask your teen: who’s behind it, what is their motivation, how does it make him feel, what he needs from it, and so on.

What Experts say 2

In the article FirstCry Parenting, the author Mrunal(2018)talks about impact of social media on children. He states the positive and negative media exposure to children, am going to use his work to focus only on the negative which is what my blog is about and by far most popular opinion that indeed media does more harm than good to children.

Addiction to social media for instance checking social feed for news feed on different sites overtime becomes a habit. For ones photograph to get more likes, it’s important to teenagers as they view it as a reward therefore becoming more valuable on what people think of them than any other aspects of their lives.

media

Young people watch videos, upload photos and love to see what’s been posted by friends. This disrupts them from other engaging things like physical exercise, verbal communication, studies and normal human interaction. Many users including adults check feeds as many times as 100 per day changing their mood and making them defensive. (Mrunal, 2018)

Some teenagers suffer from fear of missing out especially if they do self-obsesses with postings and updates, selfies. Liking other people’s post and commenting. This can lead to depression and anxiety especially if they do not get feedback on their post.

Nonverbal cues and facial gestures are important in social interaction but because of screen relationships that do not reflect real life relationships and building social skills, teenagers grow up not understanding other people mood and emotions thus turning into non empathetic and poor communicators.

Lastly a lot of social networking sites for children include cyber crime and bullying. It’s especially easier on social media platforms in terms of threatening messages, offensive graphical productions towards the victim and targets of pervert strangers who intend to cause harm by enticing young ones with sexual innuendos. (Mrunal, 2018)

What the Experts Say 1

Many experts especially those dealing with children like physician, human rights organizations and sociological scholars have had a lot to say about media positive and negative influence on children. Though the negative always outweigh the positive.Chhandita Chakravarty is a blog/website writer and medical reviewer at Mum Junction. A group of doctors specialized in dealing with children by striving for a world of heathier mother and kids by analyzing sociological and medical causes affecting children. In the blog she gives a view how media influences children

This is especially argued that children seeing violent animation then they imitate their favorite characters and imagining violence is acceptable. We seem to be drowning in information. But for teenagers, this information overload can be the cause for serious concern.

  1. Body Image:
The world is full of perfect people today. From great skin, body, and hair, lips and anything else that can be imagined and made to perfection -and children will emulate that especially those in adolescence stage who by this time are undergoing bodily physical change and therefore try to change body image. Thanks to Photoshop, the standard of beauty is overrated.  This is not a girl thing as perceived in earlier years but boys too are made to feel ‘less’ manly unless they fit the image popularized by media.(Chakravarty, 2018)

  1. Making Violence Normal:
The amount of violence in video games and movies today is scary. And teenagers spend several hours every day watching these scenes. Violence becomes their reality. Hence can define reality and fantasy.
  2. Risky Sexual Behavior:
With the youth still discovering their sexuality. It is very normal for them to be interested in everything sexual as their hormones are sensitive and can respond to touch therefore they are curious to discover more. But the amount of sex in media today can make a teenager confused therefore high risk of pregnancy, diseases and immorality. Sex without responsibility.
  3. Making Everything Commercial:
Happiness comes at a price. At least that’s the message teenagers get through media entities. Their life would be perfect if only you’d buy them that hot new game than doing physical games, that happening dress than working with what they have or try being creative by learning to sew and design something. Advertisers target teenagers to make profit causing arguments and rift in the family.(Chakravarty, 2018)
  4. Obesity:
Teen today spends most of her time in front of the TV or computer. Playing outside has become a rarity. Research shows kids who do this tend to take a lot of junk foods while watching or playing games therefore causing obesity or coach syndrome.
  5. Score Low in School:
Teens who watch too much television have lower scores in exams. Also, such teens are not good readers as they spend more time in front of the television. A study reveals that individuals with high degree scores watch less television in their childhood and teenage. Another study reveals that different media affects school work differently. Third-grade scorers with computers in their bedrooms did better than those without computers. Third-grade scorers with televisions in their bedrooms did worse on their academics than those without TV in their rooms (Chakravarty, 2018)

Current Events 2

Despite results of current investigations into links between video games, violence, aggression and sexual morality issues, more shootings still happen in schools inspired by exposure to media.

Another recent negative influence of media to children is the sexual content children are exposed to on sites and ads pop ups.Children especially teens are naturally exploratory beings. As they grow up their physical appearance changes and they use all their senses. Early exposure to pornography or sexually motivated context can have a huge damage in the curious mind of a teenager psychologically.

Let’s look at one current case of sex assault charges tied to “fifty shades of grey”scenes by university of Illinois in Chicago student on abc channel Chicago by the accused Mohammed Hossain 19 years old .he brought a 19 year old woman into his dorm and asked her to strip then tied her legs, hands then covered her mouth and proceeded to hit her with the belt. Women in the campus later talked about their concern with the movie and how it send some men to react. (abc, 2015)

Another recent case is a Swedish man killing his German girlfriend in fifty shades of grey sado masochistic sex game. She died after being hit 123times with wooden blackboard pointer. The 31 year old claimed the 28 year old girlfriend was a willing sex slave.

Current Events 1

In the US there is a lot of worry about mass shootings and gun violence. This has raised a lot of questions on the role the media plays in it.Parents are the most worried about this kind of violence and blame it on media  especially video games.

There’s a lot of evidence in fact proving that social media plays a major role after America school shootings saga the government and other institution condemned the act  and was even implementing a bill on gun control which sparked even more controversies.

The school affected were over fifty but I will mention just two recent ones Santa Fe high school in which 10 students were killed and Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school in which seven were killed on 18th February 2018.

Guns and mental illness are merely attributes to these shootings and definitely not why many children are on a killing spree. Increased regulations and mental health may decrease number of death but children are also armed with internet and thus have access to more information. They see on news how millions are killed over oil, political rift. Debauchery and violence on all kind of social media. (stephen, 2015)

Video games have also resulted massively in violence among children and youths.in recent case, to people were killed in mass shooting at Madden 19 video game tournament in Jacksonville Florida when one of the competitors went on a shooting rampage before he turned the gun to himself.

https://edition.cnn.com/videos/politics/2018/02/22/trump-blames-video-games-movies-violence.cnn

The competitor was identified as David Katz 24 through a live stream recording capturing the audio of the terrifying shooting. The other two victims were Elijah Clayton 22 and Taylor Robertson 27. (WAGNER, 2018)
